Reversed roles in traffic: video

What if?

Problem

Problem

We’ve become so used to our cars that we often don’t realize how much unnecessary hassle and misery we’re experiencing just because our vehicle is the size of a room. How much easier it is to get around by bike!

How can we demonstrate the obvious disadvantages of using a car over a bicycle without offending anyone?

The idea

The idea

Humor is always effective. We reversed the roles, and made a video about it: what if cycling was as complicated as driving a car?

The effect

The effect

We chose some typical problems that drivers face every day (e.g. traffic jams, parking, getting out of the car…) and imagined the same situations on a bike. To make sure everyone understood that we intended to be funny, not offensive, we edited the scenes to create an atmosphere of socialist newsreels, with a narration underlining the message.

To make sure everyone understood that we intended to be funny, not offensive, we edited the scenes to create an atmosphere of socialist newsreels, with a narration underlining the message. The first messages referred to the difficulties of parking in the cities, then we presented some of the main benefits of public transport compared to driving such as being able to read, relax, move. We finished with some other aspects you might consider: the effects on climate change, sustainability. After reading all the messages, you finally receive your gift, which was hidden the entire time.

Results

Results

The twisted situation made the differences between the two modes of transport visible, and perhaps also questioned the myth of the convenience of car travel, and hopefully put a smile on many people’s faces.

We used this idea in a campaign.
