Free your city!

Show children and their parents the positive impacts of a car-free city

Problem

Problem

Love for cars is deeply embedded in society: toy cars, car-toons, road movies, freedom, comfort, speed, style…although they definitely have several benefits, cars cause an enormous problem in cities. Along with pollution and accidents, the space consumption of cars is one of the greatest challenges of urban traffic management.

The idea

We created a playful tool to engage children, and show a different side of these vehicles. Instead of focusing on the disadvantages of cars, we wanted to present the benefits of a car-free city.

The effect

The effect

“Free your city!” is a game which can be used at family-friendly events, like Earth Day, Car-free Days. It consists of a huge, colorful map of the city, with lots of space for vehicles: parking lots, roads. We filled the map with stickers of cars. Participants could cut and color various objects to replace them: trams, trolleybuses, trees, flowers, bicycles, playgrounds, coffee shops. The children could remove the car stickers, and glue their artworks on the map. The time of coloring is a great opportunity to talk to the children and their parents about the impact of cars in the cities, as the game highlights this simple connection: if you put a bus on the picture, you can remove at least 10 cars in exchange.  As the kids free the city of cars, the map slowly becomes a vibrant, colorful, eye-catching image of a livable city.

The game is quite simple, and every kid likes coloring, so it will definitely work at any event. It is important to prepare the hostesses –  they should be able to explain the main aspects of sustainability to the children and their parents as well. The tool is designed to transmit a simple but important message: removing cars from our maps can create space for a lot of exciting new colors, which they created themselves!
