Parklet

How would you use a parking spot?

Problem

Problem

Cities are out of space, some people want more trees, others prefer cafes, and some people just want some space for their cars to wait for them all day. The debates about public space management are often focused on parking space: it is never enough but always too much.

The idea

The idea

Livable cities need space for many other reasons, which can be way more useful for society than a parking spot. We wanted to create a tool to show some of the other functions we can fit in a single parking space.

The effect

The effect

Our parklet is a community space with bike racks for 6 bicycles, and on the other side, there is a shaded hammock net chilling area.

The whole structure is based on the appearance of a car – this way, the message is even more powerful. The average number of passengers in a car is 1.2, that’s how many people take advantage of a parking space. Placing a parklet makes the area useful for anyone who would like to park their bike, or rest for a moment. If the parklet is there long enough, citizens get used to it, and the majority prefers to have a parklet there instead of a parking spot.

We used this idea in a campaign.
